Comparing and analysing these data with the newly published data from the European Environmental Agency (EEA, 2020) reporting the share of bio-waste collected separately to the amount of bio-waste generated by country, it can be assumed that separate collection and recycling of bio-waste can be improved in all European countries.
Still more than 50 % of bio-waste from municipal waste in Europe is incinerated or landfilled.
Besides the amount of bio-waste from municipal waste, there is a huge amount - more than 40 million tonnes - of commercial and industrial bio-waste which can be recycled in biological treatment plants.
