The European Compost Network has teamed up with the International Compost Alliance (ICA) to organise a series of webinars dedicated to the unvaluable resource that soil is. Check the programme!
ECN’s webinar with the patronage of the Departement of Biology - University of Padua will focus on the European Soil Strategy and the content of the proposed Soil Monitoring Law, as well as contributing with the introduction of a research study on the effect of compost on the biodiversity of the soil carried out by the University of Padua.

Info on the EU Soil Monitoring & Resilience Law
Back at the beginning of July, the European Commission has published a long-awaited proposal for a Soil Monitoring Law, setting up a common monitoring and assessment framework for European soils. EU Lawmakers are now discussing the proposal, putting forwards amendments which will be then voted in 2024. This is the second attempt to provide a legal framework concerning soils, with the previous one (dating more than ten years ago) ultimately blocked by national governments.
About the Speakers
Riccardo Gambini is currenlty empolyed as policy officer for environment and agriculture at the European Compost Network, focusing on EU waste and soil policies. His past experiences include working as a sustainability policy advisor for a business association and as a trainee at the European Parliament's communication unit. He holds a master degree in international relations with a focus on European affairs, and one in environmental management and economics.
Sebastiano Nigris is a researcher in the Department of Biology of the University of Padova, working in the research lab of the Botanical Garden of Padova. Since his PhD, obtained in 2015, he has been working on soil microbiota and on the interactions between plants and soil bacteria. During his career, he collaborated with the Wageningen University and Research, and recently, with the New York Botanical Garden. Recently, he started a scientific collaboration with SESA spa, an Italian company producing compost, to investigate the effect of compost on the soil and plant-associated microbial communities.
